  • Doris (Drake) Mangum's Auto-biography
  • Written, June 1972
(typed as written… tried to leave punctuation and grammar as written)

My children, Steven, and wife, Sharron Ann (Barker) Mangum, and Ronald Dean Shriver and Lynette Mangum Shriver, have asked me to write the story of my life. I'm afraid they will be quite disappointed , but I'll do my best.
ÙCtabÙDI was born May 21st, 1930, to Tom Z. and Cecel (Alger) Drake. I was fortunate enough to be born to extra special parents and twelve sisters and brothers. Mildred the oldest was a girl, a sister I never had the privilege of seeing as she died before I was born. Next was Wendell, a brother, then Howard, another brother, then Albert another brother. Finally a sister Mary Jean. I didn't get to see her either as she also died before I was born, next was a brother Francis Eugene. Then little sweet me. I was kinda special, as the two sisters before me had died very young, then come a pair of twin girls, DeVere and ReVoe, then they were blessed with another girl, Edna Lynn. Our next was another boy, Jim, then another brother Grant. Four years later was a special event we got a baby sister Cloe Ann, our family all loved babies and still do. I guess I was the middle man, I had six sisters and six brothers, six older and six younger. We should all live proud and worthy lives. Dad and Mom were married in the Temple, this means we were all born under the covenant of God. Oh how our parents did work to keep food in our mouthes and clothes on our backs, they loved their family dearly. I don't remember ever hearing an argument, or a hoarsh word between them. Dad had to work away from home most of home most of the time to make a living, and it all seemed so unfair to me, because they did so want to be togeather. Then Tradgedy stuck our home, on July 19, 1946, our Dad was killed, leaving Mom with the chore of raising this large family, yes, this was a very sad day in the Drake family, along with many others.
ÙCtabÙDAlong with the all the bad we had lots of good times as well. Playing kick can, run my sheepy run, and lots more fun games, under the only light pole in Enterprise, our home town, or go from one house to house having candy cooks and taffy pulls. Playing special tricks on Halloween, dropping Valentines to our sweeties, then waiting for the big celebration on the 24th of July this was one of our greatest times, dynamite blasts at dawn, chashing greased pigs, foot races, old time band on the back of a truck, playin music all morning. Then come my favorite, I always did and always will enjoy a good Rodeo. We got 25Ù! to spend that day and that was really a special affair.
ÙCtabÙDAlong with the hard work at school we still found time for lots of fun. Our competitive ball games, our school plays and special school dances, especially the Junior prom for some reason it was more fun than others. Then of course there were lots of good dates, good looking guys. I met Carlos Mangum in 1945, at first I didn't like him, but as time went on and I dated him a few times I fell in love with him, and what a love affair we had. He dated me two months before he kissed me goodnight, then he jumped the fence and ran down the road, and I didn't see him again for two weeks. After getting acquainted, we had more fun togeather than any other couple in the country. We were married Jan. 1st 1947. We worked hard for every penney we had but we were very happy.
ÙCtabÙDMarch 14th 1948 the Lord loaned us a baby girl. Oh how we loved this little angel, he took her back with him Sept. 16 1948. This left two very sad parents, however 11 months later Feb. 21 we were blessed with a son, Steve, who we loved as much as we had loved our girl, Valene. We enjoyed him so much, he had such a personality, he was all boy, always getting into mischief, running away, taking things from market, then hiding in old cars to eat his goods. We never knew what he was going to do next, we had to punish him lots, but we never failed to love him and never will. In May 1952 we were blessed with a dainty girl this one we were allowed to keep, we were so happy. Lynette had a completley different personality than Steve. She was a mamas girl. She liked to play in the house, making messes, cooking, scrubbing, she couldn't stand dirty face or hands, I enjoyed her so much, and still do. Both done well in school, I was real proud when they would march in the band, Steve with his trombone, and Lynette twirling her baton.
ÙCtabÙDCarlos was a heavy-duty mechanic, this meant following construction. We lived in a mobile home and we never knew when we would have to pack up and move on to another job. I seemed like our kids adjusted well with new friends and new schools. In 1965 we moved to Orofino, Idaho to work on the Dworshak Dam. A year later we went in as partners with Paul and Margene on a 180 acre ranch overlooking the Dworshak dam, it was like being in heaven, it was so green and beautiful, but we alwas have to take the bitter with the sweet, during these years. Several years apart each in the month of July, I lost my father, my oldest brother and my next to the youngest brother, all in motor vehicles accidents.
ÙCtabÙDShortly after moving to Orofino, Steve fell in love with Sharron Barker, they were married and presented us with our first darling granddaughter, how we loved and enjoyed that baby. Not long after Lynette fell in love with Ron Shriver, soon they were married and presented us with a grandson, what a special event, a granddaughter and a grandson. This Grandpa and Grandma was sur we had the world by the tail. Soon we were told that Steve and Sharron were expecting again, and they presented us with another beautiful granddaughter, how happy we were, their was nothing ment more to us than our grandkids. Then Tradgedy struck again (in July) Steve and family had moved to Portland, we were on our way to visit them when Carlos lost control of our car, due to the accident I was left paralyzed from the neck down. I mended much better and faster than expected, I still can't walk and doubt if I ever will, I spent several months at the Elks Rehab, where they done wonders with my arms and hands. Lynette was expecting her second baby in Jan. 1970 and I was so affraid I would miss the event, but I didn't. Carlos surprised me by bringing me home Christmas Eve. He had decorated a tree and the house beautifully, Steve and family come from Portland, Lynette and family was here, it was the happiest Christmas of my life. Lynette presented us with a beautiful red haired girl in Jan, we loved her just like all the others.
ÙCtabÙDThen a few months later, to be exact it was June 13th come the worst tradgedy of our family. Carlos was killed by a gunshot wound. The kids and I went through hell over our loved ones death, what a terrible loss. It was hard for me to understand why I had been left alone in my condition. It come to me that I had been left to do my Temple work, and do Carlos's work also. I am sure my children are to do the same thing. I lost a very special husband, and they lost a very special father. I hope they take their little families and have their Temple work done so we can live as a family for time and Eternity. This is my life and my sincere prayer.
